The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a series of full-size luxury sedans produced by German automaker Mercedes-Benz, a division of German company Daimler AG. The classification was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116 S-Class, which succeeded previous Mercedes-Benz models dating to the mid-1950s. The S-Class has served as the flagship model for Mercedes for over fifty years in its various incarnations. The S-Class has debuted many of the company's latest innovations, including drivetrain technologies, interior features, and safety systems (such as the first seatbelt pretensioners).[1] The S-Class has ranked as the world's best-selling luxury sedan,[2] and its latest generation, the W222 S-Class, premiered in 2013. "S-Class" is the anglicized version of "S-Klasse," a German abbreviation of "Sonderklasse," which means "special class" (in the sense of "a class of its own"). In automotive terms it refers to "a specially outfitted car." Although used colloquially for decades, following its official application in 1972, six generations of officially named S-Class sedans have been produced. Previous two-door coupe models of the S-Class were known as SEC and later S-Coupe. In 1998 the S-Class coupe was spun off in a separate line as the CL-Class, however as of June 2014, it has been re-designated as the S-Class Coupé for the 2015 model year, doing away with the CL-Class..

In 1993, when the W202 was introduced as C-Class, the traditional naming convention (numbers, plus letters) was reversed, with a leading letter identifying the line (currently, A, B, C, CLA, CLS, E, G, GL, GLA, GLK, ML, R, S, SL, SLK are in use). From then on, the long-wheelbase models (formerly "SEL") and the regular-length models (formerly "SE") are both labeled with the prefix of "S" regardless of length. For example, both 500SE and 500SEL are now labeled as S500/S500L, with fuel injection being standard by now anyway. The W221 S-Class has been available in four trim levels; the numbers are given in ascending order to denote more upscale models (e.g. S500 (S550 for US)/S600/S63 AMG/S65 AMG etc.). In official Mercedes-Benz publications and on vehicle nameplates, a space between the letter and numbers is customary (e.g. S 600)...

The Porsche Cayenne (Type 9PA) is a mid-size luxury crossover sport utility vehicle produced by the German manufacturer Porsche since 2002, with North American sales beginning in 2003. Its platform was developed by Porsche and is shared with the Volkswagen Touareg. It is the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology.

The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March following an online reveal. Although the Cayenne shares its platform, body frame and doors with the similar Volkswagen Touareg, all other aspects of vehicle design, tuning and production are done in-house at Porsche. The second generation received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show

The GTS is powered with a 405 PS (298 kW) 4.8-L V8 and features a sport suspension and 21-inch (530 mm) wheels. It is lighter than the Cayenne S and has an aerodynamic body kit. The Porsche Cayenne GTS has a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 5.7 seconds. A six-speed manual transmission is also offered.

In May 2009,[10] a limited edition version based on Cayenne GTS was introduced, designed by Porsche Design Studio and included a Porsche Design chronograph Type P’6612. Production was limited to 1000 units, 100 in the USA

As potent as the S63 is, Mercedes offers an even more outrageous S-Class for truly insatiable (and particularly well-heeled) power junkies: the Mercedes-AMG S65, which packs 621-horsepower V12 engine.

As with every model that leaves the Mercedes-AMG workshop, the centerpiece of the S63 is its engine - a hand-built, twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8. Codenamed M157, this mighty motor produces 557 horsepower and an incredible 664 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes claims a zero-to-60 mph time of just 3.9 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 186 mph - taken of its leash, the sedan could likely approach 200 mph.

A big part of the S63's accelerative heroics is its 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, which helps make the most of the blown V8's thrust and also provides improved foul-weather traction. Similar to the 4MATIC used on the latest E63 AMG, the system send 33 percent of the engine's power to the front wheels and 67 percent to the back wheels under normal driving conditions, ensuring the S63 retains its rear-wheel-drive bias

Despite the addition of all-wheel drive - along with the new S-Class' latest luxury and safety tech - the S63 is actually 220 pounds lighter that its predecessor thanks to weight saving measures like a more aluminum intensive body and structure, a lithium-ion battery and a spare wheel recess made of carbon fiber. The lower mass pays dividends in the form of improved handling as well as increased fuel economy, with the latter rated at 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway

Handling shifting duties is a seven-speed automatic transmission, dubbed the SPEEDSHIFT MCT, that utilizes a wet clutch pack in place of a traditional torque converter. The result is gear changes that can occur in just .1 second in the transmission's sportiest shift mode, yet the transmission can still provide the gentle shifts expected of a full-size luxury yacht when put in its Comfort setting.

The transmission also benefits from a smooth rev-matching during downshifts and has a launch mode for stoplight racing; if drivers want to take control into their own hands, aluminum paddle shifters situated behind the wheel allow them to do just that.

In order to keep the big four-door in check in the turns, the S63 features an AMG-tuned full-air suspension with adaptive dampers that are designed to provide an ideal balance of agility and ride comfort. Drivers can tailor the suspension - as well as the steering settings - to suit their mood by choosing between "Sport" and "Comfort" modes.
